Environmentally Sound Hydroponic Gardening
Hydroponic gardening offers advantages for even the smallest of growers and have the benefit of being environmentally friendly.
The damaging chemicals and pesticides used in traditional gardening can leave a bad taste in any environmentally responsible grower and, as such, a better way of growing more sustainably needs to be embraced.
Enter hydroponic gardening – a growing industry whose future is bright with support of individuals and large farms alike. We now have another tool in our arsenal to support a more green environment.
Environmentally Sound & Economically Sustainable
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, hydroponic gardening can be an environmentally friendly alternative to growing in soil. For all those that share my concern for the environment, this is great news. On top of the economic and environmental benefits of hydroponic gardening, it is easier to rotate crops in this system as opposed to a soil based garden. Gardeners can boost production levels easily with crop rotation as needed based on market factors and seasonal conditions.
Solar-Powered Hydroponics System
While at the same time you can reduce water consumption and increase yields, you can make an even larger impact by using a solar powered hydroponic system.
In most set-ups, the only electric needs are from the grow lights and the water pump. You can already find water pumps with solar cells attached. Or, if you are handy, you can attach a solar cell which would be able to run the pump and your grow lights – effectively reducing your carbon footprint. If that is not enough for you, perhaps installing a solar unit for your entire home is what you need.
Is Hydroponic Gardening Your Only Option?
For those in urban areas, you may not have the option to plant an outdoor garden so hydroponic gardening may be the only option you have. In addition, those with limited outdoor space will see increased yield and productivity by growing hydroponically.
For years, hydroponic gardening was criticized for the use of chemical-based, inorganic nutrients and the use of high intensity lighting for growing indoors. Currently, there is explosive growth in the availability of organic nutrients and low-energy grow lighting alternatives such as LED grow lights. Both of these tools will increase production and yield in your hydroponic garden and satisfy the needs of environmentally aware gardeners everywhere.
